CODE^SHIFT Director Dr. Srividya ‘Srivi’ Ramasubramanian is set to deliver talks at four upcoming events that explore the intersections of media, data justice, and social change.
The first event is the University of Missouri’s 'Data Justice for Collective Impact and Social Transformation: Implications for Health Communication', located at the University of Missouri on Friday, October 25, 2024, and sponsored by the MU Public Health & MU Communication departments. Dr. Ramasubramanian will delve into how to harness the power of data for justice and collective impact, particularly in health communication.
The second event is a hybrid, interactive presentation on 'Trauma-Informed Approaches to Health Communication' at SUNY Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, NY on October 31, 2024. Dr. Ramasubramanian will take a trauma-informed systems approach to discuss the roles of equity-mindedness, purposiveness, collaboration, and sustainability in media representation and data sovereignty, and how they can help recognize systemic inequalities within health communication scholarship and practice.
The third event is a virtual talk titled 'Facilitating Classroom Conversations on the Current Political Climate: A Trauma-Informed Dialogic Approach' on November 1, 2024. This talk comes amidst a heated presidential race at a time when the country's political climate is charged like never before, and is designed to equip instructors with the correct necessary tools to support students in the wake of the upcoming election.
The fourth event is the Syracuse Open Data Day at the Central Library branch at S. Salina St., Syracuse, NY on November 2, 2024. Dr. Ramasubramanian will join a lineup of thought leaders discussing the information the City of Syracuse puts on the Open Data Portal. She will be talking about Data Justice Frameworks from 11:30 a.m. to 12:25 p.m. Participants will attend breakout sessions to learn industry standard tools to access and visualize open data, as well as pitch projects for a month-long data challenge on 'Healthy Housing: Quality, Safety, & Accessibility'.
Each event taps into a different facet of Dr. Ramasubramanian’s expertise - the ethical use of data, open data’s role in equity, and the power of media to shape narratives - presenting an opportunity for attendees to explore how communication and data justice make a social impact.
