In recognition of her lifetime contributions to the communications field, the National Communication Association (NCA) will honor CODE^SHIFT Director Dr. Srivi Ramasubramanian with its  Distinguished Scholar Award at its 110th Annual Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana. The convention is set to take place from November 21 to 24, 2024.

The Distinguished Scholar Award is the highest honor bestowed by the NCA, awarded in recognition of NCA members’ lifetime scholarly achievement in the field of human communications. The award was created in 1991. Recipients are selected to "showcase the communication profession."

Dr. Ramasubramanian is one of five scholars who will receive the award this year. She will be receiving the award in her first year of eligibility, 20 years after receiving her Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University. She is also the second Syracuse University faculty member in three years to win the prestigious honor.

“This award recognizes the community organizing work that CODE^SHIFT has accomplished, especially in terms of engagement with racial and ethnic minority groups as well as with media literacy educators,” said Dr. Ramasubramanian.

The accolade follows Dr. Ramasubramian’s recognition in September as one of the top 2% of scientists cited globally in 2023, according to the Elsevier Data Repository. This is her third consecutive year being included in this percentage group.

Dr. Ramasubramanian is also an International Communication Association (ICA) fellow, a distinction she earned in May 2023. She was the first Newhouse School faculty member to achieve this prestigious distinction, and the only woman of color in the 2023 cohort.
